Beating Illness with Beets

Does your daily diet pass muster for building better blood pressure, a stronger immune system and a smoothly functioning  liver and gall bladder? If beets aren't on it, maybe not.  Beets have a rich supply of beta carotene to speed tissue repair, detoxify the bloodstream and fight brain fatigue. They are also high in betaine, a vitamin-like substance that aids in brain function plus  folate, the anti-depression B vitamin. Beets supply vitamin C and rank among the top 5 sources of anti aging antioxidants. To benefit the most, juice both the beet root and the leaves and combine with other carotene-rich foods such as carrots, spinach or squash.

Throwaway Nutrition

Don't neglect the butt. A cup of broccoli stalks (pare away the tough outer skin and you can julienne or cube the insides for salads or use as crudites with a creamy dip) has slightly  more calcium than a cup of ice cream, with zero fat. Broccoli leaves offer more  vitamin  A than the stalks and this is the only part of the plant supplying vitamin E.  Likewise the core of the cauliflower is rich in vitamin C and the cauliflower leaves we often discard supply more calcium, iron and vitamins and C than the flowery heads we usually opt for.

Put away the Aleve. Reach for Capsicum frutesceus  (common garden peppers) to oust aches.  the capaicin in peppers helps with both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis by increasing DNA synthesis and triggering production of pain-depressing collagenase and prostaglandin.. As a cream, pepper-derived capsaicin can relieve the itch of psoriasis and the pain of the shingles.Got a cold? Loosen phlegm with a cocktail of  red ad green peppers juiced with carrots.

onions, cabbage and celery

Forget an apple  day!  An onion a day can help to fend off stroke, while daily cabbage (sauerkraut or cabbage juice) can protect you from ulcers.  And juicing  celery with onion and cabbage  will clear your complexion and firm up collagen and elastin to prevent wrinkling.

The Shellfish-Sauerkraut Connection

A disease-free body is an alkaline body. And a good PH
level that gets you there is between 6.5 and 7.5. That means reduce the acid eats like coffee, white  bread and surprise, shellfish. And up the alkaline foods like leafy greens, berries and surprise, sauerkraut. Get your daily dose of fermented cabbage by topping your salad with a forkful of it, drained ad fluffed. Sauerkraut helps to recolonize the gut with good bacteria and helps prevent various forms of cancer.

Tea Black Not Light

Swirling a little cream in your tea ? Not such a hot idea if you're trying to maximize your antioxidant intake. The proteins in milk or cream bind to and neutralize much of the nutritional value.  Drink that Earl Grey black to boost your immunity, prevent cavities, lower blood sugar and improve cardiovascular function, all documented benefits of the second mot consumed beverage in the world (water is still #1).
